CHOICE reveals the best and worst toilet paper

CHOICE has reviewed over 30 products from Woolworths, Coles, Sorbent, Quilton, Kleenex and more to determine which toilet paper is best for you and which one to dump.

“Finding the right toilet paper can be tricky – with so many options it can be overwhelming to know which one to choose. At CHOICE, we score toilet paper on four key areas to find which products are the best quality. We test for softness, how easily it tears, its resistance to puncturing and its disintegration time,” says CHOICE household expert, Chris Barnes. 

If a toilet paper is recommended by our experts, it means it’s scored 70% overall, plus has scores of 65% or higher on all four tests. 

Here are the top four recommended toilet paper products: 

1. Sorbent 4 Ply Thick & Soft

CHOICE Expert Rating: 82% 

Price: $0.59 per 100 sheets

2. Quilton Toilet Tissue 3 Ply Softness White 

CHOICE Expert Rating: 76% 

Price: $0.60 per 100 sheets

3. Kleenex Luxury Quilts AirCushion Softness

CHOICE Expert Rating: 74%

Price: $0.57 per 100 sheets

3. Quilton Toilet Tissue with Coconut Oil 3 ply

CHOICE Expert Rating: 74%

Price: $0.54 per 100 sheets

Here are the lowest-scoring toilet paper products:

1. icare Luxury Eco Toilet Tissue 3 ply

CHOICE Expert Rating: 48%

Price: $0.56 per 100 sheets

2. No Issues 100% Bamboo Toilet Paper 

CHOICE Expert Rating: 49%

Price: $0.42 per 100 sheets 

3. Kleenex Toilet Tissue Complete Clean with CleanRipple

CHOICE Expert Rating: 51%

Price: $0.31 per 100 sheets

“If you have a sensitive sewerage system at home, we strongly recommend giving these three the flick. All scored 0% on our disintegration test. We’re not saying they’ll block your sewer, but they do take a lot longer to break down than the top products,” says Barnes. 

“If that doesn’t steer you away, these products were also more difficult to tear off the roll than most other products,” says Barnes.

But if you’re keen to buy eco-friendly toilet paper, don’t despair; we found several recycled and bamboo products that performed better than these ones.
